Tablet Speaker Cleaner for iPad and Android tablets

Tablet speakers live on the edges, which is exactly where crumbs, fluff and sticky little fingerprints end up. Hold the tablet with the muffled edge pointing down, put the volume at about 80% and press Start, using Dust Sweep for slow fading or Water Eject after a splash on the outside.

iPads aren’t water resistant. Apple doesn’t give any iPad a water rating, so if yours was dunked or had a drink tipped over it, switch it off and get it checked instead of running sound through it.

Quick version

  • Not sure where the speakers are? Left and Right in the Test tab will tell you.
  • Muffled edge down, then Dust Sweep for crumbs and lint, or Water Eject for drops on the outside.
  • Finish with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Apple says no compressed air on an iPad.

Where are the speakers on a tablet?

Most tablets play stereo out of grilles on the two short edges, so when you turn it sideways to watch something the sound spreads left and right the way it should. The bigger models tend to have four speakers, a pair on each short edge, while cheaper ones might only have one or two. Layouts really do vary from model to model, so the quickest way to find yours is to play the tones in the Test tab and listen, or even rest a fingertip near each edge and feel which one’s buzzing.

How to use the tablet speaker cleaner

Take the case or keyboard cover off first, since folio cases have a habit of covering one edge’s grilles completely, and disconnect any Bluetooth headphones or speakers so the sound actually comes out of the tablet. About 80% volume is right; tablet speakers are bigger than phone ones and get properly loud.

Then hold the muffled edge facing down and run whichever mode fits: Dust Sweep for crumbs and lint, Water Eject for drops that landed on the grille. If both edges sound dull, do one, flip the tablet over and give the other edge its own cycle. When you’re done, wipe along the edges with a soft, lint-free cloth and compare the two sides in the Test tab.

It all works in Safari, Chrome or Samsung Internet, there’s nothing to install, and no audio ever leaves your tablet.

Why tablet speakers get muffled

Think about where tablets actually get used: on the sofa, in bed, propped up in the kitchen, and in kids’ hands. The edge grilles collect whatever’s around, so fluff, crumbs, dried juice and the grey dust that lives at the bottom of every bag. Unlike phones, tablets rarely end up in water, which means dust and grime are behind most tablet speaker problems, and that’s why Dust Sweep is the better first try. It rises from 100 Hz to 600 Hz and back every four seconds, shaking the grille at lots of different rates so whatever’s wedged in there has a good chance of working loose.

How Apple says to clean an iPad

Apple’s guide How to clean your Apple products has a section just for iPad. The gist is to turn the iPad off and unplug every cable before you start, and then clean the outside with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth while keeping moisture out of every opening, speaker grilles included. Window cleaner, household sprays, aerosols, solvents and anything abrasive are all on the no list, and so is compressed air.

So to clean iPad speakers safely, the combination is the tablet speaker cleaner’s sound to loosen things up, then a dry brush and a cloth on the outside. If liquid has got inside, Apple’s advice is to get it serviced quickly, and liquid damage isn’t covered under warranty.

Galaxy Tab and other Android tablets

Some Galaxy Tab S models carry an IP68 rating, but most other Android tablets don’t have one at all. The cleaning routine’s the same either way. If a water-resistant Galaxy Tab did get wet, Samsung’s usual advice applies: shake it gently, dry the outside, and don’t charge it while the port is showing a moisture warning. Samsung’s page about moisture in the charging port covers tablets as well as phones.

Grilles look clean but it still sounds bad?

A few things can make a perfectly clean tablet sound wrong. If one side’s quieter, check the balance slider, which on an iPad is tucked away in Settings › Accessibility › Audio & Visual. If it only sounds thin with the keyboard case on, the cover’s probably blocking part of the grilles, so try it without. If there’s no sound in one particular app, look at that app’s own volume and mute settings, plus the mute toggle in Control Centre on iPad. Crackling at every volume level is a different matter, though; that’s likely a speaker fault, a tablet speaker cleaner won’t fix it, and a repair is the next step.

Keeping tablet speakers clear

If the tablet gets used at mealtimes or by children, a wipe around the edges every week or two goes a long way. Try to keep it off the bed when you can, because bedding sheds far more lint than you’d think, and a quick Dust Sweep once a month stops light buildup from packing down into the mesh.

FAQ

Tablet Speaker Cleaner questions

Is a tablet speaker cleaner safe to use on an iPad?

Yes. It plays sound the same way a video or song does, within the iPad’s normal volume. Stick to one to three cycles.

Can I use compressed air on iPad speakers?

No, Apple specifically says not to. Use the dust sweep and a soft, dry brush instead.

My iPad got wet. Should I run Water Eject?

Only for drops sitting on the outside of the grille. iPads aren’t water resistant, so if water might have got inside, switch it off and get it checked.

Why does only one side of my tablet sound muffled?

Usually that edge has more dust in it, or the balance setting has drifted off centre. Clean that edge and check the balance.

Does it work on Amazon Fire tablets?

Yes. Open the page in Silk or any other browser you’ve installed; the tool works in every modern browser.

Still sounds muffled?

Run Deep Clean with 3 cycles, then let it air-dry for an hour.
